Bathroom Remodel Ideas for Sherman Oaks Homes

Hall baths, primary suites and walk in showers: what works in Sherman Oaks homes.

Short answer: most Sherman Oaks bathroom projects fall into two groups, the original hall bathroom in a post war ranch and the primary bathroom. Both start at $40,000 for a bathroom remodel and usually take about 5 to 10 weeks. Here are the ideas we plan most often.

The original hall bathroom

The hall bathroom in a post war ranch is usually a compact room with a tub shower combination and a single vanity. A full rebuild usually means new supply and drain lines, a rebuilt shower pan, new tile and a vanity sized to the wall. In older homes, galvanized pipe and cast iron drains can add cost once the walls open, so we check before we promise a price.

Idea 1: swap the tub for a walk in shower

This is one of our most requested bathroom updates. We plan the drain, the valve and the glass at the same time, and we handle the waterproofing and the permit that come with it. A frameless glass panel, a niche and a bench fit in the footprint that once held a tub.

Idea 2: a vanity with real storage

A vanity sized to the wall, with deep drawers and a tall cabinet nearby, keeps counters clear. In a larger bathroom, a double vanity can make mornings easier.

Idea 3: the primary bathroom

In a primary bathroom, the work often centers on a larger shower, a double vanity and better lighting and storage. Hillside homes toward Mulholland Drive often have the room for it, and it is common in larger remodels where a suite is being added.

Idea 4: add a primary bathroom to a ranch home

Many ranch homes have only a hall bath. We can often build a primary bathroom from a closet, part of a bedroom or a small addition. A walkthrough shows what the framing, plumbing and city rules allow.

Idea 5: waterproofing and ventilation you never see

Most bathroom failures come from what you cannot see. We build the slope, membrane and drain connection properly, test before tile, and vent the exhaust fan outside.

Permits in Sherman Oaks

Sherman Oaks is part of the City of Los Angeles, so bathroom permits come from LADBS. Moving plumbing, relocating a shower or tub, changing a wall or adding circuits generally needs a permit. A like for like swap often does not. Read our bathroom remodel permit guide.

Planning checklist

  1. Decide whether you want a walk in shower or a tub.
  2. Pick tile, vanity and fixtures before demolition.
  3. Ask how the waterproofing is built and tested.
  4. Confirm the permit plan and the schedule in writing.
  5. Plan for the weeks the bathroom is out of service.
