The flats north and south of Ventura Boulevard hold most of Sherman Oaks's classic ranch homes, many with a detached garage that is a strong candidate for conversion into an ADU. Properties higher up toward Mulholland Drive bring more site and access planning into the picture, since those garages are often built into a slope. In both cases, converting an existing garage is typically the most affordable ADU path, since the foundation and structure are already in place, and California state law prevents the city from requiring a replacement parking space when a garage is converted.
